The Cauvery water dispute involves Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in a longstanding legal battle over river water distribution. In February, the Supreme Court issued an order specifying a water-sharing ratio between the states, after which the Centre was directed to present implementation plans by May 3; however, the Supreme Court subsequently rebuked the Centre for not implementing this order. The Centre has also been exploring the establishment of a permanent tribunal to adjudicate inter-state river water disputes, a mechanism available under law when negotiations between states fail.
